A capacity crowd of civic leaders, elected officials and community residents joined the Board of Directors Rondo Avenue, Inc., (RAI) for a morning breakfast on Wednesday, July 12th, at the Hallie Q. Brown Center for a celebration to introduce and honor Six Heroes of the Rondo Commemorative Plaza.
The program was emceed by T. Mychael Rambo and popular singer and Rondo resident Yolande Bruce performed two songs. Marvin Roger Anderson, co-founder of RAI and CEO of the Commemorative Plaza make the presentations to the Six Heroes and said:
“To those dozens of you who stepped up —you humbly thanked in the programs on your tables this morning. We have chosen six individuals – from funders, government officials, black employee organizations, foundations, consultants, and everyday heroes – who we believe represent your spirit and generosity to make the plaza a reality”.
The Six Heroes were: Nathaniel Khaliq, Jonathan Palmer, Mayor Chris Coleman, Commissioner of Transportation Charlie Zelle, Marion Jones Kennon and Kimberly F. Price. Mr. Anderson made a brief introduction of each “hero,” which was followed by a quick video to honor them and present each with an inscribed paver that will be installed on the historic walk at the plaza to memorialize their contribution to this effort.
Mr. Anderson also announced that all of the financing needed to complete the plaza had been secured. Construction will begin in August with 80% completion by October. Installation of over 500 brick pavers and 14 Exhibit Panels will begin in Spring, 2018 right on target for a July, 2018 Grand Opening coinciding with the 35th Annual Rondo Days Festival.
Over 150 attendees enjoyed the food sponsored by the French Meadow Café and Bakery. Many thanks to the committee lead by Taffy Jones with able and dedicated assistance from Dawn Selle, Hallie Q. Brown Golden Agers, Mica Anders, N’didi Marie Ugboajah and Sharon Kennedy. The proceedings were videotaped by the Minneapolis Television Network under the direction of Tene Wells and Todd Wardrope.
