Welcome to Rondo Commemorative Plaza’s First Annual Summer Series of events: Music, Health and Wellness
We are very excited to present our first series of events, Music, Health and Wellness Summer Series at the Rondo Plaza, to our community. With the help of 3M, Health Partners, Saint Paul Rotary club, Harlan Boss Foundation, and the YMCA we have been able to collaborate on some fun activities and events that will be free and open to all.

Meet Your Local Firefighters
Join us at the Rondo Commemorative Plaza, to meet your local firefighters. This event will be hosted by Gerone Hamilton, community relations chief and 21-year veteran of the Saint Paul Fire Department. Brings the kids Tuesday evening to explore one of the fire trucks that keeps our community safe. Event kicks off at 5:30pm!
Roots & Blues Music with Lady J

Lady J is a 30-year veteran blues broadcaster, working in both radio and television in the Twin Cities. In 2011, she expanded her radio show to include a stage performance called “Lady J Griot & Her Root Doctors”, which focuses on the African heritage of blues music. The magical lyrics of the blues, such as “black cat bone” and “Little Johnny Conkeroo”, come directly from the spiritual roots of the American slaves and appears repeatedly in blues music. Lady J Griot uses these lyrics to “work the roots”, to keep us connected to each other…body, mind and soul.
Chess For Beginners

Chess is the classic game that develops spatial thinking and strategies and builds focused concentration. Beginners learn basic game rules and opening tactic moves. This class will be taught by one of our college interns Brigid Freed, for an hour Saturday mornings on the plaza.

Get your body moving on Saturday morning! On June 29th, instructor Eli Murdock is hosting a Zumba session for all. Eli is a Saint Paul resident and has been a Zumba instructor for seven years. He promises a fun, party-like atmosphere where you can get healthier in the process. All ages are encouraged to come! Classes take place Saturday mornings.
Jazz with Jamela Pettiford and Trio and Open Mic

Jamela Pettiford, was born to sing. Music flows in the blood of this descendant of the late Oscar and Ira Pettiford, the famous jazz musicians. Jamela began singing in church at the early age of 4. She sang for schools, entertained at holiday functions, and sang with several youth choirs. Jamela Pettiford has sung with the Big John Dickerson Band for the past six years. Along with the Band, she was the recipient of the 2005 Minnesota Blues Hall of Fame. Her music is a fusion of different genres deeply rooted in soul. She is currently working on her debut CD.

Jamela began singing in church at the early age of 4. She sang with many local and national acts, entertaining in plays, TV commercials and numerous large venues. Jamela Pettiford has sung with the Big John Dickerson Blues Band for over 15 years; with the Band, she was the recipient of the 2007 Minnesota Blues Hall of Fame. GOD’s Queen Music is a fusion of different genres deeply rooted in soul.
There will be an open mic following the performances. This series takes place every other Tuesday evening starting in July, from 5:30-7pm. This page will be updated soon for more information about signing up for the open mic.

Tai… big or great. Chi… ultimate energy. Tai chi is an ancient form of Chinese exercise consisting of slow, beautiful, relaxed movements that develop a sense of balance and harmony between mind and body. Tai Chi practice will give you the opportunity to use all the information and movements learned in the instruction class in a moving meditation.
Our instructor, Bruce Tyler, has studied Yang-style Tai Chi locally since 2005, and Sun-style Tai Chi (Tai Chi for Health) since 2011. Classes will take place Wednesday evenings from 5:30-6:15pm. Children 10-15yrs are welcomed to attend but must be accompanied by an adult. Bruce has led a Tai Chi classes at the St. Paul Midway YMCA since 2014. HE is also a senior trainer for the TAi CHi for Health Institute. He enjoys empowering people of all ages to improve their health and well-being through this gentle movement practice.

Regions Hospital Health & Well-Being Workshops

Heart and Soul Drum Academy

March to the beat of your own drum this summer at Rondo Plaza! Heart and Soul Drum Academy is an organization whose goal is to educate and invigorate young minds. The djembe hand drum classes they host teach youth how to come together through teamwork, communication, and creativity. Children ages 3-17 are encouraged to drop by and make some music! Wednesday evenings from 5:30-6:30pm.
Teron Buford College Application Workshop
As you start thinking about applying to college, there are clear ways to make your applications—and yourself—stand out. Learn the latest insights and insider expertise from admission professionals about how to succeed in the application process.
This one-day workshop is designed for rising high school juniors and seniors to give promising students the best practices and tips and tricks for successfully navigating the college application process.
Join Teron Buford, University of St. Thomas’ award winning Director of Admission, to learn more about the college application process. Come get some tips and tricks on what colleges are looking for in an applicant, financial aid, and much more. Those interested in applying for college and their families are encouraged to attend!
All events held on the plaza are free to attend, however space is limited. Children must be accompanied by their legal guardian or an 18+ chaperone and should not be left unattended. The Rondo Plaza is not liable for any injuries or lost/stolen items on the premises. These events will be held outdoors weather permitting. Cancelations will be announced on our Facebook page and emails will be sent out two hours before events begin if weather forecasts are poor.
